Amnesty International is a NGO (Non Governmental Organisation). This means that the organisation is not receiving governmental founding for their work.
Their motto is that it is better to light a candle then to curse the darkness.
Amnesty International was founded in 1961 by a British lawyer with the name Peter Benenson. He founded the organisation because of an article he wrote in The Observer about two Portuguese students called "forgotten prisoners" , they where imprisoned for raising their glasses and saying a cheer for freedom. The article started a letter campaign to release the forgotten prisoners in many countries. today the organisation has over 2.2 million members, supporters and subscribers in more then 150 countries. More than 400 people work at Amnesty International secretariat in London. Amnesty works to protect human rights, and they do this by using media attention, direct-appeal campaigns, research and lobbying. They have got years of experience in doing this now, and it works!
Amnesty International also called Amnesty or AI gets they money from donations, and members.. They do really get through in this world, and you could help them by giving a donation at http://www.amnesty.org/en/how-you-can-help .
The Organisation does not work with any specific organisations, but they cooperate with all organisations that have the same goal as Amnesty International.
Amnesty has done a lot of great things during their time, and the latest is that they focus on the problems during the olympics in china. Where there are rebells and people who are imprisoned for speaking their mind.
They also got a prisoner released in Marocco, who had been in jail for making a facebook profile of the maroccan prince Moulay Rachid. Their letter campaign and the way they get people's eyes up for these horrible things that happen around the world is amazing. They actually get trough and get to help people. They have helped people all over the world that have been imprisoned for things that is irrelevant, and probably just because "they feel like it".
They mostly use English but they also have a lot of translators for other languages. Their webpage comes in 4 different languages, among them are English and Spanish which are the mostly spread languages.¨
I belive that Amnesty International is one of the organisations that do most good of all the NGO organisations and that it is interesting how they do it.
